Singapore Unbound

Singapore Unbound is a transnational literary and arts non-profit organization based in New York City. Founded in 2014 by Singaporean poet and author Koh Jee Leong, the organization facilitates cultural exchange between Singapore and the United States, promotes freedom of expression, and publishes literary works through its independent press, Gaudy Boy.

The organization operates on the philosophy of "Singapore beyond Singapore," challenging territorial sovereignty and political constraints to foster a creative community that exists beyond national borders.

History and Mission

Singapore Unbound was established to document and support the growing movement of writers and artists moving between Singapore and the United States. Recognizing a history of two-way expatriation that had yet to be formalised, Jee Leong Koh created the platform to build "people-to-people understanding" through arts and activism.

The organization is guided by a Five-Point Compass, which emphasizes:

  • The right of every individual to a creative and fulfilling life.
  • Environmental stewardship.
  • The use of arts to highlight and change restrictive social and political arrangements.
  • The amplification of underrepresented voices.
  • Global solidarity for the common good beyond the framework of nation-states.
