Louis Ng Kok Kwang
Louis Ng Kok Kwang (Chinese: 黄国光; pinyin: Huáng Guóguāng; born 8 December 1978) is a Singaporean politician from the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nee Soon East Division of Nee Soon GRC since 2015. He is also an animal lover and environmental activist. Ng is also the founder of the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES)17.
Education:
Ng received his early education at St. Gabriel's Secondary School and Catholic Junior College. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the National University of Singapore in 2002 and a Master of Science degree in primate conservation from Oxford Brookes University in 2004.
Career:
His passion for animal conservation prompted him to found an animal protection organization named ACRES while still an undergraduate student in 2001. The organization aims to increase community engagement and raise awareness of animal protection issues. He started working full-time at ACRES after graduating from NUS and has been the Executive Director since 2002. ACRES has over 20 full-time employees and over S$1 S$ 1 million in funding by 2014.
Ng was introduced as part of a five-member PAP team representing Nee Soon GRC in the 2015 general election. The team gained 66.83 percent of the vote. In 2020, Ng was elected Chair of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Sustainability and Environment in the 14th Parliament.
Parliamentary work
Ng proposed an idea that would enable divorcees to buy a flat without consent from their ex-spouses. He also introduced the Wild Animals and Birds Bill. Ng often speaks up for needy children and supports single-parent maternity leave.
Secondhand smoking issue
Ng voiced his concerns over the danger of secondhand smoke, citing the official data that one Singaporean dies every year due to secondhand smoke.
He suggested using new LCD screens in HDB lift lobbies to raise awareness of smoking’s risks and inquired about new technologies for spotting secondhand smoke in homes.
