HealthServe: Caring for Singapore’s Migrant Workers

HealthServe is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Singapore dedicated to providing holistic care and support for migrant workers, particularly those in low-wage sectors. Established in 2006 by Dr. Goh Wei Leong and his team, HealthServe addresses the medical, emotional, and social needs of migrant workers, many of whom face challenges such as workplace injuries, mental health issues, and barriers to healthcare access.

Mission and Vision

HealthServe's mission is to “bring healing and hope to migrant workers in distress” by offering affordable medical care, mental health support, and social assistance. The organization envisions a more inclusive Singapore where every migrant worker is treated with dignity and compassion.

Key Services and Programs

1. Affordable Healthcare
   • HealthServe operates low-cost clinics in areas such as Geylang, Mandai, and Little India, offering primary care services and specialist referrals.
   • The clinics cater to workers who lack adequate access to healthcare due to cost or legal constraints.
2. Mental Health Support
   • Recognizing the stress and isolation faced by many migrant workers, HealthServe offers counseling services, mental health workshops, and peer support groups.
   • These programs address issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma related to workplace injuries or family separation.
3. Social Assistance
   • HealthServe provides food aid, temporary shelter, and financial assistance to workers in distress, especially those involved in disputes over unpaid wages or who are recovering from workplace injuries.
   • The NGO works closely with caseworkers and legal experts to advocate for workers’ rights.
4. Community Engagement and Education
   • HealthServe conducts outreach programs to educate migrant workers about their health, legal rights, and available resources.
   • It also organizes public talks and workshops to raise awareness among Singaporeans about the contributions and challenges of the migrant worker community.
5. Research and Advocacy
   • HealthServe collaborates with academic institutions and policy-makers to conduct research on migrant worker welfare, contributing to policy recommendations for improving living and working conditions.

Notable Achievements

• Recognition and Awards: HealthServe has received numerous accolades for its impactful work, including the Singapore President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Award (PVPA) in 2015.
• COVID-19 Pandemic Response: During the pandemic, HealthServe played a critical role in addressing the healthcare and mental health needs of migrant workers, especially those affected by the dormitory lockdowns.
