The Independent Singapore
The Independent Singapore (TISG) is an online news platform established on 9 August 2013 by a group of journalists with the goal of providing an alternative perspective on news and current affairs in Singapore. The platform covers a broad range of topics, including politics, economics, and social issues, offering in-depth analyses and opinion pieces that seek to enrich public discourse.
Early Years and Advisory Board
In its formative years, TISG formed an advisory board to guide its editorial direction. Among its notable members was Leon Perera, a former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) from the Workers' Party. Perera played a key role in shaping the platform’s early direction.
However, in June 2016, he stepped down from his advisory role and began divesting his shareholding in the company to avoid any perceived conflicts of interest following his political appointment.
Another prominent figure associated with TISG during its early phase was Edmund Wee, the managing and creative director of Epigram, a well-known Singaporean publishing company. Wee contributed his expertise in media and publishing while serving on TISG's advisory board, further strengthening the platform’s foundation.
Regulatory Challenges
Over the years, TISG has faced significant regulatory scrutiny. In April 2022, the platform was issued a correction direction under Singapore's Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) for publishing an article that contained false statements about Law Minister K. Shanmugam.
The article claimed that the minister intended to step down from his position. Following the directive from the Ministry of Law, TISG complied by publishing a correction notice alongside the original article.
Current Operations
As of November 2024, TISG continues to operate under the leadership of Kumaran Pillai, who serves as the publisher. The platform remains committed to delivering independent news and analyses, maintaining an active presence on social media to engage with its audience. By covering diverse topics relevant to Singaporean readers, TISG aims to contribute to a vibrant and informed public discourse.
