Controversies
Kate Spade bag
- When Tin was introduced as a 27-year-old People’s Action Party candidate before the 2011 General Election, pictures of her appeared online flaunting a Kate Spade handbag, which she said was a gift from her husband. Online accusations of ignorance, materialism and privilege proliferated.
- Her husband, Ng How Yue (黄好游), held the following positions:
- 2024 - currently Permanent Secretary (Services) at MOH and concurrently as Permanent Secretary (Development), Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF).[1]
- was appointed Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Law in December 2014
- was appointed concurrently as Second Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Health in 1 January 2017
- before that, he was Second Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Trade & Industry in October 2011
- he was also the Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister from September 2008 (Lee Hsien Loong, who was PM from 2004 - 2024)
Back-of-envelope estimation
- June 4 2020 - during debate on the Fortitude Budget, she said, “Based on my back-of-envelope estimation, the budgetary support per capita in Singapore is S$23,225.”
- This drew questions from many people who said they had received only a fraction of the estimated amount (around $600).
- The public discussion subsequently revived the Kate Spade public hoo-ha.
Director at Grab Singapore
- Jan 2023 - Accepted job as Director of public affairs and policy at Grab Singapore while holding her MP position
- As an MP with direct access to ministers and senior officials, on top of the power to influence legislation, working with one of the biggest private companies in the areas of public affairs and policy gave a sense of perceived conflict of interest
- 10 Feb 2023 - Grab announced Tin would be taking up a new role, which was director of corporate development whose duties included "realising synergies across our investments and acquisitions, as well as supporting strategy development".[2]
- left Grab 7 months later for unnamed payments-focused fintech company.[3]
