Giam marked his debut in politics in the 2011 general election when he was a member of a [[Workers' Party]] team in East Coast GRC. Despite not winning the election, Giam was appointed as a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seat due to their significant electoral performance, making him one of the first opposition members to assume such a role. He was a NCMP from October 2011 to August 2015. Giam ran again in the 2015 election but his team only gained around 39% of the vote. Giam prioritized the party unity by handing over the NCMP role to his teammate Leon Parera.
He began as a project manager at MSC Consulting and as a senior consultant at Avanade (a Microsoft–Accenture joint venture). In 2014, he co-founded a technology solutions firm and serves as its CTO. He is also a Registered Management Consultant.<ref name=":0" />

Giam contested in the 2020 election with the team consisting of Sylvia Lim, Leon Parera, Pritam Singh, and Muhamad Faisal Manap. The team represented Aljunied GRC and won over 59% of the votes against the PAP.  Giam then was elected as the Member of Parliament representing the Bedok Reservoir–Punggol ward of Aljunied GRC in the 14th Parliament.
