Controversies

Housebreaking by Chinese Nationals

  • Sep 2024 - NCMP Leong Mun Wai’s questions on whether the visa exemption had led to an increase in arrests and if the automated lanes at Changi Airport had heightened the risk of non-bona fide travelers entering Singapore.
  • a string of recent housebreaking cases in private residential estates linked to foreign syndicates involving Chinese nationals, police looking for 14 nationals who were already out of Singapore
  • Sun Xueling stated that even considering the 14 Chinese nationals of interest to the police who are currently overseas, the arrest rate of Chinese visitors is lower compared to the previous year.
  • She also stated that since the 30-day visa exemption arrangement was implemented on 9 February 2024, there has been no increase in the number or percentage of short-term visitors from China being arrested in Singapore.
  • when asked whether government is considering tougher penalties for cross-border crimes, she only answered the government regularly reviews and updates laws, and remains vigilant about new crime trends[1]

Pro-Palestinian Appeal

  • 7 October 2024 - pro-Palestinian supporters from Punggol West gathered at a Meet-the-People Session to discuss sanctions against Israel with MP Sun Xueling
  • Sun Xueling highlighted Singapore’s humanitarian efforts and advocated for an immediate ceasefire
  • However, residents questioned the feasibility of a ceasefire given Singapore’s ongoing arms trade with Israel, including purchase of Blue Spear missiles for the Navy, the display of Israeli weapons at the Singapore Air Show, and Israeli defense company Elbit Systems which operates in Singapore.
  • Sun Xueling only promised to raise these concerns with the relevant ministries.
