He was first elected into Parliament in 2011 as MP in the Moulmein-Kallang GRC. Subsequently, he was elected twice as MP for the Marine Parade GRC.

Besides the above-mentioned appointments, he also held the following position in a volunteer capacity:

  • 2013 ~ 2020 - Vice President of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS)

Career before joining politics

  • worked at Allen & Gledhill LLP, handling corporate and commercial disputes, restructuring and insolvency matters, and international arbitration.
  • appointed Senior Counsel in 2015

  • studied law at the National University of Singapore (NUS)

Controversy

Income-Allianz deal

  • sparked criticism because of concerns that it would detract from Income's mission to provide affordable insurance for lower-income workers
  • during its corporatisation in 2022, Income Insurance had been granted an exemption from Section 88 of the Co-operative Societies Act
  • 14 October 2024 - after public outcry and repeated appeals from ex-Income CEOs, notably Former NTUC Income CEO Tan Suee Chieh, govt finally blocked the deal [1][2][3]
