Controversies
Police Report on Aggressive Resident
- Tan Kiat How shared a TikTok video about an incident that occurred during the Monday MPS session at Block 408 Bedok North Avenue 2
- police were called to his meet-the-people session (MPS) in Bedok on Monday (17 Sep 2024) evening after a resident ‘became a little more aggressive’, reportedly over a job issue
- Some members of public questioned whether the issue arose from a lack of tact by certain PAP volunteers in handling the situation
- Others called for more proactive measures from the MP rather than just expressing empathy.[2]
- Tan Kiat How is one of a few PAP MPs who reported experiencing aggression at MPS. The other two were Jurong GRC's Tan Wu Meng and ex-Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Seng Han Thong, who was reported as being attacked twice.
- The then-Yio Chu Kang MP Seng Han Thong was punched by a 74-year-old former taxi driver in May 2006
- January 2009, Seng Han Thong doused with paint thinner and set on fire by a 70-year-old man believed to be mentally ill and suffered burns to roughly 15 percent of his body
- Seng Han Thong finally stepped down in Aug 2015[3]
Free Ice Cream Publicity
- the MP for East Coast GRC embarked on a free ice cream for residents publicity drive in June 2024, following in the footsteps of Low Yen Ling, MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC, who did it in May. Many members of the public criticized it as an election gimmick back then as rumors of a general election in 2024 were swirling.[4]
