Ong Ye Kung ( Hanzi:王乙康; Pinyin: Wáng Yǐkāng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ông It-khong, born 15 November 1969) is a Singaporean politician from the governing People's Action Party (PAP) He has been Minister of Health since 2021. He has been the MP representing Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2015.

Education

Ong attended Maris Stella High School and Raffles Junior College before graduating from the London School of Economics in 1991. He completed her Master of Business Administration from the Institute for Management Development, Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1999.

Early career

Before entering politics, Ong was a civil servant at the Ministry of Communication, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, the National Trade Congress Union, and Keppel Corporation. He also served as the principal private secretary for Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong from 2002 to 2004.

Politics

He debuted in politics in the 2011 general election as one of the five members of PAP representing Aljunied GRC. However, the team lost to the opposition Workers' Party (WP), gaining 45.28 percent of the vote. The team contested again in 2015, representing Sembawang GRC, winning 72.28 percent of the vote.

Ministerial roles

Before serving as the country's Minister of Health, Ong held several ministerial positions. From 2015 to 2020, he was Minister of Education, sharing responsibilities with Ng Chee Meng from 2015 to 2018. Ong then became Minister of Transportation from 2020 to 2021. From 2020 to 2021, he was also the co-chair of the Multi-Ministry Task Force set up by the government to manage the handling of Singapore's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parodying Taylor Swift's clip to promote physical and mental health

Ong posted the video parodying Taylor Swift's hit "You Belong With Me" to promote the importance of maintaining physical and psychological well-being.[1]

The video coincided with the pop diva's concert in Singapore on 2 March 2024.

Ong's creative video gained positive feedback and hundreds of thousands of views.

Personal life

Ong is married and has two children. He is one of the ministers with the highest number of social media followers, with an average of 150,000 followers on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.

Ong's family had been involved in politics. His father, the late Ong Lian Teng, was one of the 13 members of the now-dismissed Barisan Sosialis and a Member of Parliament from 1963 to 1968.

Ong's mother, Ong Soo Lung, was involved in opposition politics.[2]
